Union Road Minister Nitin Gadkari told the Rajya Sabha that at least 13,022 lives would have been saved in the year 2020 if the airbags had worked in cars. Gadkari said new rules were being framed for the safety of motorists and occupants.
From October 1, all vehicles must have 6 airbags
Gadkari said the transport ministry plans to implement a new rule from October 1. All vehicles must have at least 6 airbags, including side airbags. After Gadkari's announcement, from October 1, all vehicles will have to carry at least 6 airbags, including the side.
1.5 lakh people die in accidents every year
Gadkari said the use of airbags could have saved the lives of at least 8,598 people by 2020 after direct collisions with vehicles. "Every year we face five lakh accidents and 1.5 lakh people die in accidents," he said. We are taking a number of steps to prevent such an incident. He said that it is mandatory to have 6 airbags in vehicles.
