6 million people will get scholarships directly from Aadhaar Link
According to a news report, the government is preparing to link caste and income certificates with Aadhaar. The government says this will ensure that 6 million people from socially and economically backward castes get scholarships. After linking gender and income certificates to Aadhaar, an automatic verification system will help the government reach the right beneficiary.
Initiatives will be launched in these states
Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana will be the first to start distributing scholarships through automatic verification system, as these states have completed linking caste and income certificates with Aadhaar. This arrangement will enable deserving children to get scholarships on time.
The scholarship system will be digital
The ET quoted a government official as saying that the decision was taken after a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi's secretaries. At this meeting, it was suggested to fully digitalize the scholarship system for post-matric (tenth) children of Scheduled Castes. Following this suggestion, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has set a target to implement this scheme in the current financial year.
The move by the central government also has several political implications. Many people are not even aware that they are getting scholarships from the government before or after matriculation. In many cases, the ministry found the same bank account linked to 10 and 12 students, indicating that the accounts are maintained by the institution and have nothing to do with the students. But now that they have been linked to Aadhaar, the scholarship will go directly to each student's account via Direct Benefit Transfer. The BJP could also take advantage of this in the coming elections, as it did in the recently concluded Uttar Pradesh elections by transferring the benefits of government schemes directly to the people's accounts.
